Love is not/ Love is

Love, in so many words

#10

Love is not the everyday discovery of new things to love about him;

Love is the everyday discovery of new things to love about herself.

#9

Love is not the rush she feels as his breath bears upon her cheek, their glasses tinkling together;

Love is the security she feels as she wakes up, knowing that he did not lay a finger on her while she slept.

#8

Love is not her acceptance of his parents’ strange peculiarities;

Love is her gratitude to them for giving life to and raising the man she respects.

#7

Love is not the bouquet she receives from him every year;

Love is the single petal in the attic, pressed between the poems which bear her name.

#6

Love is not the arousal that he gets from seeing her bare naked breasts;

Love is the knowledge that they belong to the woman whom he would give everything up for.

#5

Love is not the way he looked at her as her beautiful summer dress fluttered in the wind;

Love is the way she let his wine spill on it as he reached over to kiss her for the first time.

#4

Love is not the umbrella he holds close above their heads;

Love is the helter-skelter of their running in the rain after she gave it away to a stranded old lady.

#3

Love is not the song he sang to her on their wedding day;

Love is his soft crooning by her side while she dreams.

#2

Love is not about never having to say “I’m sorry”;

Love is about saying “I’m sorry too.”

#1

Love is not the promise that he gave her to become a better man;

Love is the same promise he gave himself when he first laid eyes on her.
